Technology(Flab Chab)

WALA:The new Food that we made
Throughout this experience it was very fun because I had a new partner for cooking and his name is Matthew.Today was 5th to last week of cooking.Today we made a Flab Chab, when I heard it I thought it was something to do with meat. But it wasn't, Miss Tuipulotu was explaining to us what is was and I heard no meat in their. While we were cooking I looked around and our group was going the fastest. It must be when we went up first to get our ingredients or t might be the other team are slow. When I looked over to my friends table they decided to use golden syrup and all the other table chose golden syrup but I wanted something new so I chose maple syrup.

As I was pouring it in I had a taste and when I tasted it, it became my new favorite flavour. When we were melting all our  Ingredients our consistency look different then everyone else one.Our one was more syrupy then buttery. Here is how you make it.

Matariki Stars in New Zealand

WALA:MATARIKI
This week is known as Matariki and marks the beginning of the Maori New Year.
Matariki is the name of the Pleiades star cluster and the season of its first rising in late May or early June, which is taken as the beginning of the Maori new year.
Traditionally, it was a time for remembering the dead, and celebrating new life. In the 21st century, observing Matariki has become popular again. Heaven-bound kites, hot-air balloons and fireworks help mark the occasion.

My feelings about this article is happy because I've been learning lots about matariki. I felt happy that I get to learn more. The challenge for me today was trying to learn more and more about matariki. The part I like the most about this article is how many facts there was in it.

Kiwisport Reflection

WALT:Play basketball games to improve or dribbling.
Image result for nbaToday was our last day of Kiwi Sport and I was so upset because kiwisport was so fun.It gave lots and lots of memories to reflect on.When we got down our old teacher Hyrum was back and he was ready for teaching. It got cold so we did a warm up and it was to jog to the other end of the court and back. Then we got to choose a game and the first game we chose was golden child. After getting split into our groups the game begun and I was the first runner and I almost got out but I made it home. Then we made our group names the other group was called Cavaliers and our team was called the Tamaki. Throughout the game our team lost and we wanted revenge so we went hard on the next game.On our next game we played basketball and Our team was winning. While we were playing the next class came and I was so sad because this was our last lesson on basketball.

The challenge I found challenging throughout the lesson was trying to shoot.Because there was to much pressure which made me do a air ball.
The best part of the lesson today was being able to get some of my shots in and also having lots of fun.
The part I never liked was losing when we were playing golden child and also I don't like how it was our last day doing Kiwi Sport.
I feel so happy that I improved in my dribblings and also I felt sad its our last day.

Matariki Rap

WALA:The seven stars of matariki
Today I wrote a Rap with 2 of my friends. They're names are Tevita and Metui. This experience was easy for me because rhyming and flowing is kind of what I like to do.The challenge for me today was coming up with rhymes that relate to matariki. The part I found easy was saying it.Here is the rap my group came up with.
This is a rap about Matariki
A cluster of stars shining over Auckland city
It comes in either late may or june
Shining bright in the night just like a full moon

For many of the Maori it’s a new year
Light shining from the sky like a chandelier
Helping the crops grow for the people
Planting them is pretty easy and simple

They are way past mercury and mars
Metui is gonna tell you what they are
In Matariki there are seven of the stars
Shining brighter in the sky like lights from a car

It may be winter but we still celebrate
Waiting for the stars we just can not wait
Having a feast with so much to eat
Sit down relax and take a seat

Think about the stuff you're gonna learn
Let's go in a circle and wait for your turn
Tell us what you know about matariki

Here's a hint it's not only in Auckland city

Maths game term 2

WALT:Show our visitors what we do for maths
This experience was so cool because the group I was in was very good at maths. They helped me to learn new skills. In my group there was Tevita,Lj,Vuni and me.This was a good session to show parents what we are good at.
The challenge for me today was trying to understand the game my friend came up with. Then I kept saying "HUH" and he was trying to be specific as he can but it didn't work so we just played another game called heads up.This game is like when 2 people get a card but they are not allowed look at is then the 3rd person looks at the 2 cards and tell them what it equals but he cant say there card and then the 2 people look at each others cards and then they have to guess there own.
The part I liked the most is when we got off track and we started doing magic tricks.I only liked this part cause I knew what my friends talent is and It was my first time seeing him do something that will blow our mind. His magic trick inspired me to do magic but I knew it was gonna take for ages to learn the one he did so ill just stick to rugby.

Matariki Facts

Image result for the reappearance of the seven Matariki stars, in late May or early June, signals the beginning of the Māori New Year.

IAML:To write at least 10 facts about matariki

This week room 9 has been learning about matariki and I was researching for 10 interesting facts about matariki. This experience was very fun because I've learnt lots about matariki and I can teach my little ones about it.This experience also has helped me to learn more about the seven stars and all of their message. The challenge for me today is trying to research each sister to see facts about them. Here are my 10 facts.

1. The reappearance of the seven Matariki stars, in late May or early June, signals the beginning of the Māori New Year.

However, not all tribes celebrate at the same time. Some may begin festivities on the first full moon after the star cluster rises, or on the next new moon.

2. Matariki is a star cluster, not a constellation.

A cluster is a group of stars that are near each other in space. When seen from Earth, the stars in a constellation appear to be close together in a pattern, but they might actually be far from each other. There are about 500 stars in the Matariki cluster, but only six or seven are visible without a telescop.Image result for matariki]

3. You can see Matariki for yourself.

From early June, before sunrise, look to the north-east horizon. Find the constellation Tautoru, or Orion’s belt (sometimes called ‘the pot’). Trace a line northwards from the three stars of Tautoru. Look for a faint sparkle of tiny dots, about the same width as Tautoru is long. This is the Matariki star cluster. Matatiki can also be seen during the summer months in this location of the sky after sunset.

4. Matariki is one of the star clusters nearest to Earth.

Compared with other star clusters, Matariki is close to Earth – but it’s still 440 light years away. If you drove there in a car at a speed of 100 kilometres an hour, you would arrive in 4.8 billion years!

5. Matariki has many different names around the world.

The star cluster is visible to the naked eye from most parts of our planet, and has many different names. In English, it is called the Pleiades (its ancient Greek name) or the Seven Sisters. The Hawaiian name is Makali‘i, or ‘eyes of royalty’, and in Japan it is Subaru, meaning ‘gathered together’.

6. Some tribes use Puanga (Rigel in the constellation Orion) as a signal for the new year.

Matariki’s  reappearance in the north-east sky is not visible in all parts of New Zealand, especially in areas to the west of mountains. For some iwi in Taranaki and Whanganui, and on the West Coast of the South Island, the new year begins with the rising of Puanga.

7. In the past, priests or experts looked to Matariki to predict if the next harvest would be abundant.

The brighter and clearer the stars seemed, the warmer the growing season would be, ensuring a good harvest.

8. Many iwi speak of the seven Matariki stars as a mother and her daughters.

The mother is Matariki, and her daughters are Tupu-ā-nuku, Tupu-ā-rangi, Waipunarangi, Waitī, Waitā, and Ururangi.

9. For some iwi, Matariki is connected to the creation story of Ranginui and Papatūānuku.

One Matariki story is about when TāwhirimāteaTāwhirimāteagod of the wind discovered that his parents, Ranginui the sky father and PapatūānukuPapatūānukuthe earth mother, had been separated. He tore out his eyes in anger and threw them into the sky – the stars are his seven eyes.

10. Matariki was used by the crews of voyaging vessels to guide them across the Pacific.

Tohunga kōkōrangiTohunga kōkōrangiexpert astronomers used stars and star clusters such as Matariki to help them navigate great distances across the Pacific. Today, there is a revival of these traditional navigation skills. Crews have sailed double-hulled waka from as far as Rarotonga to Aotearoa New Zealand, guided only by traditional methods.

Sea Pickles hit US coast

A rare, tiny marine creature known as the “unicorn of the sea” has swarmed in its millions on the west coast of America, ruining fishermen’s nets.
Scientists are baffled as little is known about these creatures.
Fishers along the west coast have told researchers that in some places they are unable to catch anything because the creatures are forming clusters that are so dense and tightly packed. Their hooks, when pulled from the ocean, wriggle with the odd-looking creatures, which are sometimes referred to as “sea pickles” or “fire bodies”.
The distinctive animals – only a few millimetres long – have washed up on popular beaches.
Hilarie Sorensen, who is part of a new research team set up to study the bloom, said: “Right now we are scrambling to learn as much as possible while we have the opportunity.
“If we continue to see this many, what impact will it have on the ecosystems here, and what economic impact on the fisheries?”

Earthquake on Greek Island

WALT:Reflect on a article I read
A powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the western coast of Turkey and the Greek island of Lesbos, killing one woman.
Buildings were shaken from the Turkish province of Izmir to the Greek capital Athens.
The epicentre of the quake on Monday (Tuesday NZ Time) was about 84 km northwest of the Turkish coastal city of Izmir and 15km south of Lesbos.
Extensive damage was reported at a village on Lesbos.
“Tens of buildings have collapsed and roads are blocked off,” said Marios Apostolides, the divisional commander of the fire brigade.
Lesbos Island was at the forefront of a migration crisis two years ago when hundreds of thousands of war refugees landed there seeking a gateway into Europe.

This article made me feel very sad because it was a very powerful earthquake that can kill people on Greek Island. The part I felt sad the most is there buildings and houses collapsing. The part I found challenging is trying to think of a way us New Zealanders can help them.

What is the Government Budget?

On Thursday the 25th of May the Government will deliver our annual budget.
Yes, that’s right. Just like your family, your school and hopefully you with any money you might have – the Government has a budget to account for all income we receive and money we will spend in any given year.
Every dollar that the Government spends is a dollar that we have taken from hard working Kiwi households and our budget makes us accountable to those whose tax dollars we are spending. It also offers the Government an opportunity to highlight our priorities moving forward whether that be health, education, policing .
In 2016 we budgeted to have $31,205,000,000 income. We used this money to fund things like your school that educates you, the roads we drive on, rail networks that transport our goods around the country, and the hospitals that care for us when we are sick.
This year we are expecting that we will end up with around $700 million surplus. This means we have brought in more revenue than we had expected, or spent less. If we had brought in less money than we expected or spent more this would likely have delivered a deficit.
I would highly encourage any young person with an interest in our Government to watch closely on budget day to try and see how it all works. I’ll be back writing in two weeks to break down just what we spent our money on in an easy to understand way.

Team NZ beat Artemis to win challenger series

Team New Zealand has beaten Artemis 5-2 to win the America’s Cup challenger series.
They now have the right to challenge for an America’s Cup rematch with Oracle.
Racing was delayed at the start of the day because of a lack of wind.
However, when the wind did arrive Team New Zealand managed to comfortably beat the Swedish team by 56 seconds. That result ensured a relatively comfortable 5-2 scoreline.
The America’s Cup series between Team New Zealand and holders Oracle Team USA starts on Sunday.

Quality blog post.

We are learning to create a positive digital footprint by connecting with our readers in a kind, positive and helpful way. This was a fun experience because I get to work with my buddy and we were communicating with each others Ideas. The challenge for me today was doing the rubric. But the part I like the most is completing it and working together.

WALT:Reflect on our technology.
Today we had technology and I was so happy because I knew we were gonna make something very nice. When we were checking the roll I realised a new student came and he was my best friend's cousin.I was so happy to show him around technology and show him who our technology teacher was.The goal for me today was trying to make our new student welcome and make him feel safe. When we got to our classroom at Tamaki College I realised that our teacher was very angry because we were late.At technology we made a potato salad with a chicken kebab. The part I found very challenging was trying to cut the potato and also trying mayonnaise. The part I liked the most is being able to eat it all.
